Cuttack: A major fire broke out inside godown of a surgical implant shop located at Mangalabag area in Cuttack on Saturday.

According to reports, the godown-cum-shop was functioning in a building where Andhra Bank branch is also located. Following the incident, three fire tenders of Odisha Fire Services rushed to the spot and launched a massive operation to douse the flames.

Chief Fire Officer Sukant Sethi informed that the fire was effectively controlled by the fire fighters and there was no damage to the bank.

“The exact cause of fire can be ascertained only after a probe,” said Sethi adding that focus is being given to ensure that fire do not spread to other shops in the locality.

"Surgical supplies like cotton and other combustible materials were present inside the godown. We will take action as per the guidelines," said deputy fire officer, TK Babu.

"After smoke was spotted, some people broke open the door and called the Fire personnel. The Fire services arrived promptly," said a local.

Meanwhile, when the godown owner was asked about the fire safety equipments in the building, he said "The godown was opened 20 years back and at that time there were no such requirements.
