Bhubaneswar: Finally, Madhusudan Law College, one of the oldest and premier Law Colleges in Odisha, is all set to officially become an University from April 28.

The Law University will have jurisdiction over all Law Colleges across the State, said the State Higher Education department in a notification.

As per the notification, the decision to upgrade the law college into a varsity has been taken by the order of the Governor. The department has supressed the earlier notifications issued on March 3, 2020 and June 11, 2020 in this regard.

“The State Government do hereby alter the territorial jurisdiction of all the existing Universities of the State and establish a new University called “Madhusudan Law University” at Cuttack by upgrading Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack with effect from the 28 April, 2021,” the notification read.

“All the existing Government and Private Law Colleges, except the constituent Law Colleges of different Universities of the State, shall cease to be affiliated from their respective University from 28th April, 2021 and shall stand affiliated to the Madhusudan Law University from that date. The said Madhusudan Law University shall have jurisdiction, save as aforesaid, over all Law Colleges of the State,” it added.

On May 20, 2018, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that the Madhusudan Law College in Cuttack would be upgraded into an university. “Steps have been taken in the government level to declare Madhusudan Law College as the Law University,” he had said.

In February this year, the Higher Education department had invited applications from eligible candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Madhusudan Law University.
