Puri: Grief shattered the family members of the deceased Congress leader Ajit Mangaraj, who was the party candidate for Pipili bypoll, again following the death of his mother due to Covid-19 on Friday night.

Ajit’s mother Khetramani Mangaraj was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

She was admitted to the hospital following a heart attack. Later, she was tested positive for Covid-19, said family sources.

“Covid-19 had severely infected our grandmother. Her lungs were affected. She suffered multiple organ failure and breathed her last at around 12 pm yesterday,” said the grandson of Khetramani.

According to family sources, the last rites of Khetramani will be performed in accordance with Covid-19 protocols.

“Ajit’s family has been completely shattered over the development. The mother and son couldn’t see each other before their sad demise. Ajit’s father is also a heart patient. May God give them the strength to fight with the situation,” said a relative.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ajit had succumbed to the pandemic while undergoing treatment in a hospital. Following his death, Pipili by-election, which was scheduled to be held on April 17, has been postponed by the Chief Election Commissioner of Odisha.
