Koraput: At least three women were killed and another suffered critical wounds after rain triggered a landslide when they were collecting white soil in Koraput district on Friday.

The mishap occurred at Podaguda under Potangi police limits of the district. The deceased have been identified as Ramulama Musuri, her daughter Devi Musuri and Mitula Kota.

The injured has been admitted to Patangi community health centre. As her condition deteriorated, efforts were made to shift her to another hospital.

According to sources, 11 women from Miriyalipadu village under Ralegada panchayat had gone to Podaguda to collect white soil which they apply to walls and floors of their houses. Four among them had entered a tunnel and were extracting the limestone when rain lashed the area triggering a landslide.

Three among them got trapped under the heap of white soil and succumbed on the spot. Another woman, who was partially buried in the debris, was pulled out by others.

“They were collecting white soil when rain hit the area which triggered the landslide and they got trapped under the debris. Three women died while another is undergoing treatment. A case of unnatural death will be registered,” said Sunabeda sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Niranjan Behera.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief over the death of the three women and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for their next of the kin from CMRF.

“The State government will also bear the medical expenditure of the injured one,” a statement released by the CMO said.
