Sundergarh: A major tragedy was averted after CRPF jawans recovered a landmine, suspected to be planted by the Maoists, during combing operations at Langalakanta forest under K Balang police limits today. According to reports, the 15-kg landmine was subsequently diffused by the jawans.

The recovery of landmine is said to be a major success for the security forces as the red rebels are trying to strengthen their base in several bordering areas in Jharkhand and Odisha. Moreover, as the Maoists are also observing the ‘Saheed Saptah’, security has been tightened as a precautionary measure.

Sources said the CRPF jawans initially spotted some wires in the forest and later recovered the landmine. Meanwhile, combing operation has been intensified in the region.

In a separate incident, one person was killed while three others were injured in Maoist attack on a camp site of labourers at Chakradharpur in Jharkhand bordering Odisha on Friday.

According to reports, the attack was carried out by nearly 12 to 14 armed Maoists who have also torched six vehicles at the construction camp site.
