Koraput: The boy, who was rescued after being trapped under the debris of an abandoned building at Bariniput village under Sadar police limits in the district which collapsed yesterday, died today while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

The mishap took place when four members of the family were present inside the building. While three of them were safely rescued, a massive operation was launched by the personnel of Odisha Fire Services, ODRAF and Koraput police to rescue the boy.

Narrating the ordeal, Daitari Khara, father of the deceased said, "When they(family members) screamed at him for not studying, he went into the building. When they tried to get hold of him, the building collapsed suddenly."

“At around 7:30 PM yesterday, we got information about the building collapse. Three persons were first rescued, but it took time to rescue the boy as he was trapped under the rubble. Later, we mananged to rescue him too,” said a member of the rescue team.

The boy was then rushed to the hospital but he succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today.

Meanwhile, the three other rescued persons are currently undergoing treatment at the DHH and their condition is stable.

Speaking on the mishap, chief construction engineer Anand Chandra Sahu, said, "Since 2014, the building was marked unsafe. We will take immediate steps to demolish the structure."

Jeypore sub-collector Lokanath Dalabehera said, "I have sent letters to all the departments to check safety of buildings. If any building is found unsafe, it will be demolished at the earliest."
