Kendrapara: After Mama Mallick of Teragaon village under Marshaghai police station here gave birth to a baby girl, her family was brimming with joy to welcome the newborn to their home. The happiness knew no bound until the villagers heard the shocking news that en route to home from hospital this morning, the newborn was killed along with her mother in a road accident.

Reportedly, Mama was admitted to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital last evening after she complained of labour pain. She gave birth to a baby girl later in the day. However, today morning when she was returning home from hospital, along with her baby, a speeding truck hit the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in near Khamarapada area. Unfortunately, both were killed on the spot.

Mama's husband Madan Mallick, her aunt and the local ASHA worker, who were also in the ill-fated vehicle, sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Even the driver of the auto-rickshaw was admitted to hospital in critical condition.

"We were extremely happy after she (Mama) gave birth to a baby girl. Unfortunately, she died along with my wife when a truck hit our auto-rickshaw. I have also received grievous injury on my head," said a teary-eyed Madan.

A pall of gloom descended on Teragaon village following the death of the new born and her mother.

Speaking about the tragic incident, Sushant Sahu, a local resident said, "They were returning home happily after being discharged from the hospital. Four persons have been admitted to the hospital."

Meanwhile, the local police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
