Jharsuguda: Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested the prime accused in the ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) lottery fraud in which a daily wager family of Belpahar had lost over Rs 1 lakh.

A special team of Jharsuguda police arrested the accused identified as Niraj Kumar from a place on Indo-Nepal border, said Bikash Das, Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police (SP).

"We have arrested the accused from Indo-Nepal border. We have also acquired information regarding other criminals associated with the crime and have shared details with West Champaran Police. A number of criminals are involved in the case. The main accused, Niraj Kumar has been arrested and all of his associates will be arrested soon," the SP said.

Niraj who is a resident of Bihar is being taken to Jharsuguda on transit remand, he added.

During the course of investigation, police found that the accused had been involved in several cyber frauds and swindled around Rs 3 crore from people.

On February 23, Niraj had cheated Rs 1.69 lakh from Nita Chhatar, daughter of a daily wager in Belpahar through fraudulent means. The accused had called Nita that she had won Rs 35 lakh through a lucky draw conducted by the Amitabh Bachchan starrer popular show Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Later, the accused suggested her to deposit Rs 1.69 lakh in a specified bank account in multiple instalments in order to avail the lottery amount.

Nita realised it as fraud and subsequently lodged a complaint with Belpahar police. After registration of a case, the police launched an investigation based on the bank account details of the accused.
