Puri: The Puri district administration on Thursday urged Habisyalis (women devotees who observe Kartik brata) not to visit the pilgrim town during the holy month of Kartik this year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a large number of pilgrims (particularly widows and women) usually flock Puri in service of the Lord Jagannath and observe Kartika Brata, they will be at risk because most of the Habishyalis are elderly and fall in the COVID-19- vulnerable group.

Puri Sub-Collector, Bhabataran Sahu informed that no special arrangement in the form of camps has been made for the Habishyalis in Puri due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as they are most vulnerable, they should take extra care and follow the COVID-19 norms, he said.
“As COVID-19 cases are rising in Puri, we urge Habishyalis not to visit Puri and observe the puja at homes,” said Sahu
It is pertinent to mention here that during the holy month of Kartik, widows and women from different parts of the State visit Puri. During the whole month, special rituals are held and most of the Habishyalis observe partial fasting.
