Mayurbhanj : A herd of marauding elephants caused enormous damage to property as well as crops at Chanchabani village under Karanjia forest range of Mayurbhanj district.

The herd comprising 22 elephants of several age groups have strayed into the residential area leaving the people in a state of panic for the last 11 days. According to reports, the elephants have damaged more than 5 houses and destroyed paddy crop in several acres of land in the village.

According to sources, the wild elephants on Sunday night moved to Karanjia block and broke the boundary wall of a rice mill, chuda mill and farm house destroying property worth lakhs of rupees.

On being informed about the jumbo menace, the forest department officials rushed to village. Efforts are underway by the forest employees to drive the pachyderms back into the forest.
