Jharsuguda: The Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport will have Instrument Landing System (ILS) soon for regular operations.

According to reports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will install the ILS in Jharsuguda airport with an aim to facilitate daily flight operations.

The ILS, a device which is also called radio navigation system and can provide an aircraft with horizontal and vertical guidance before and during landing in case of low visibility due to fog or heavy rain, is expected to become functional within the next six months.

Recently, the airport with only Visual Flight Rule (VFR) operations system, which cannot help aircraft to land in low visibility, drew flak for a series of cancellations of flights due to bad weather.

The VSS airport is the second commercial airport in Odisha after Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated it on September 22, 2018.
