Khurda: The Vigilance sleuths on Monday arrested the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Jatni police station after he was caught red-handed receiving bribe of Rs 50,000.

The accused cop identified as Sanjeeb Mohanty had allegedly demanded the bribe money from a youth hailing from Kudiary village in the area for removing the latter’s name from a case.

Soon after the arrest, locals gathered at the police station and alleged Mohanty of being a corrupt official. Some of them even attempted to abuse him, informed sources.

“This town never had an officer as corrupt as him. However, I request the Commissioner of Police to deploy a good officer who can ensure law and order in Jatni especially ahead of the upcoming Ganesh Puja. There is also a need to curb the drug smuggling business making inroads here,” said Jatni Municipality Councillor Ananta Behera.

The anti-graft sleuths from the Cuttack division of Vigilance officials later raided Mohanty’s quarter in Jatni, reports said.
