Bhubaneswar: Executive Director of Interpol MM Oberoi on Tuesday stressed on the role of research and development to effectively counter rising cyber crime.

Addressing the 62nd Senior Police Officers' Conference, Oberoi highlighted the magnitude and impact of Cyber Crime globally and discussed various issues involved in tackling it.

He also stressed on the importance of actionable intelligence, forensics, capacity building and training, joint cyber crime investigation by teams cutting across district, state and national boundaries to counter cyber crime.

On the occasion, IIT Kanpur Director Prof A. Karandikar addressed on “Technology in Aid of Policing.” Talking about the rapid and disruptive advancements in the field of communications and the advent of technologies such as 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), he called upon the senior police officers to harness these technologies to meet public safety challenges posed by Terrorism, Left Wing Extremism and Mass Gatherings and Events.

He discussed on how the new age technologies can be applied in Intelligence Gathering, Crime Detection and Law Enforcement.

Moreover, discussion was also carried out on “Countering Social Media Campaigns” by a Senior Officer of Union Home Ministry. This apart, deliberations on legal aspects and procedures involving arrest, custody and interrogation of accused persons were held.
