Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police today busted a motorcycle lifting racket by arresting an impostor in guise of advocate for stealing bikes from various public places in the capital city.
What’s more shocking is that police, after arresting the prime accused, recovered as many as 46 stolen bikes from his possession.

As per sources, the Badagada police laid a trap at several places and was prepositioned to nab the accused involved in bike lifting. Interestingly in a few moments, one Sashi Mishra, who has been identified as the prime accused arrived at the local court in the guise of an advocate to flee with a bike parked on the premises.

But before he could think of stealing it, police personnel who were watching his movements through the CCTV, caught hold of him and his associates.

Later, as many as 46 bikes were recovered from his possession of which 17 were returned to the owners as part of a drive by the Badagada police, sources said.

Twin City Police Commissioner, Satyajit Mohanty informed that the thieves involved in the racket had a unique modus operandi.

“They used to deceive people as they wandered around various places wearing the dress of an advocate. They knew that way no one will be suspicious. They have stolen bikes from premises of Court, sub-registry office, Tehsil office, Capital Hospital and many other public places. Based on the CCTV footage, police personnel of Badagada PS nabbed them and seized all the stolen motorcycles,” said Mohanty.
