Bhawanipatna: Tension ran high at Kashibahal village in Jaipatna block of Kalahandi district on Sunday after several houses were reportedly damaged under the impact of powerful stone blasting in nearby hills.

According to sources, powerful blasts were carried out in Landimundi hills last night. The blasts were so severe that walls of several houses at the village and nearby areas developed cracks. Besides, the roof of some other houses were also damaged.

Protesting illegal blasting of stone, the residents today morning reached the blast site and demanded immediate arrest of the persons involved in the illegal activities. They also alleged that despite repeated complaints, the administration has not taken any step to stop the illegal quarrying.

"Powerful blasting was carried out in the hills last night. The blasts were so severe that our houses shook and developed cracks. We immediately reached the blasting site. However, no one was present there," said Debraj Bag, a resident of Kashibahal village.

"We demand immediate stopping of the illegal blasting," he added.

Speaking about the incident, Tehsildar in-charge Tikunu Puta said, "We have not given any permission for stone quarry. It is totally illegal. The area was not given on lease to anyone."

"We did not have any report of heavy blasting in the area. As the illegal activities have now come to light, we will inquire into it and action will be taken against the accused if found guilty," he added.
