Bhubaneswar: The Covid-19 pandemic has snatched away livelihood of people forcing some to even take extreme steps while others are using the crisis to exploit and cheat. A case in point being a recent incident from Odisha where a youth was saved by Ollywood actor Sabyasachi Mishra from falling prey to an online kidney sale racket.

One Somnath Gahana of Rajakanika in Kendrapara district was running a small hotel in Bhubaneswar. However, COVID-19 lockdown hit his business hard and ruining his livelihood. A few days ago, Somnath reportedly saw a message on WhatsApp offering over Rs 3 crore per kidney.

A stressed Somnath, made up his mind to sell his kidney and contacted the group through a link given in the message. Somnath was then reportedly asked to visit Delhi for the same. However, smelling foul play, he contacted Ollywood actor through social media and it just saved him from becoming a prey.

"I was all set to go to Delhi when one of my friends told me to contact actor Sabyasachi Mishra before taking any steps. Sabyasachi sir asked me to send him all details and advised me not to take any such step," said Somnath Gahana.

Sabyasachi Mishra said, "The kidney sale word shook me. I asked for his (Somnath Gahana) phone number and all details including screenshots of his chats with the kidney buyers. I was surprised that such a big racket was trying to dupe him in a planned manner."

Apart from Somnath Gahana, one Tapan Kumar Majhi also had a close shave from the clutches of the kidney mafia. The Ollywood actor informed about Tapan through a tweet.

Meanwhile, Somnath has reportedly lodged an FIR in connection with the incident. "Many helpless people are falling prey to such rackets. I want action against all those criminals," said Somnath.

"Such miscreants are on the prowl and it's the responsibility of police to put a check on it. However, people need to be aware and alert," said retired police official, Suryamani Tripathy.
