Balasore/Dhenkanal: Tension prevailed near Seragad toll gate on NH-16 in Balasore after locals detained two containers allegedly engaged in illegal transportation of cattle.

As per reports, locals along with Go Rakshak activists intercepted the trucks and rescued over 200 cattle which were allegedly being transported illegally to other parts of the country from Odisha. Three more cattle-laden trucks reportedly managed to escape from the spot.

“At around 1 AM, we received information that five containers were loaded with cattle from Khurda and would cross Seragad toll gate in the wee hours. Accordingly, we intercepted the trucks and managed to rescue cattle from two vehicles while three other vehicles escaped from the spot,” said a local resident.

Sources said the trucks were being escorted by nearly six to seven persons in an SUV who also fled the scene after two trucks were detained.

Later, locals staged a demonstration alleging lack of action on part of authorities to put a check on illegal transportation of cattle. Locals alleged that there has been rise in the number of cattle thefts from several parts of the State.

Senior police official said that immediately after getting information about the detention of two trucks, efforts were taken to clear the traffic. Moreover, appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved in the illegal transportation of cattle, police said.

Meanwhile in Dhenkanal, a special police squad detained six trucks near Nihalaprasad area on suspicion of cattle smuggling. Sources said as many as 600 cattle were rescued here.
