Cuttack: A constable who was deployed to guard gangster Sheikh Hyder at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Monday claimed that some relatives of the dreaded criminal facilitated his escape from the hospital.

The constable, Mohammad Mousim who lodged a complaint with the Manglabag Police with regard to fleeing of Hyder said that the gangster’s son, brother and other relatives used to visit him frequently during his treatment at SCB.

“At 4.30 pm on April 10, I was guarding him when his relatives had come to Hyder’s cabin in the surgery ward and talked to him. They threw some poisonous substances at me. As I lost my consciousness, Hyder fled,” Mousim stated in his complaint.

Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP targeted the Odisha government over the escape of Hyder and demanded the government to find out who helped him in the process.

“Even if 36 hours have passed since Hyder escaped from a premier hospital, the State government has not made any effort to find out who helped him in the plan. It was learned that biryani was being given to Hyder, who used to involve in tender fixing and extort money from behind bars, at the hospital while empty beer bottles were found beneath his bed in the hospital. Who was supplying those items to him need to be investigated,” demanded leader of opposition Pradipta Naik.

On the other hand, Jail DIG Subhakanta Mishra assured that stern action will be taken if any negligence and conspiracy angle is found in the escape of the gangster.

“Commissionerate police is inquiring into the matter while Cuttack DCP is personally monitoring the case. If we come across any negligence on our part, action will be taken accordingly,” Mishra said.
