Patnagarh: Illegal transportation of cough syrup continues unabated in Patnagarh area of Bolangir district. This was again evident after huge quantity of the banned cough syrup was seized by Excise Department on Wednesday.

Over 2,000 bottles of the banned cough syrup of a particular brand were seized from Belpada and Tara villages following a raid. Two persons have been detained in this connection, informed Excise officials.

On December 2, nearly 16,000 bottles of cough syrup were seized in the district. The locals alleged involvement of a major racket behind the rampant sale of the cough syrups which are being used as substitute for alcohol. Despite such illegal use, the officials of health department are yet to take concrete measures in this regard, alleged local residents.

“Around 2,000 bottles of cough syrup have been seized from the houses of the accused persons. Basing on intelligence inputs, we are conducting raids in different parts of the district, ” said Bolangir Excise Superintendent, Sridhar Majhi.
