Balasore: The Sahadevkhunta Police in Balasore district last night seized a huge cache of brown sugar and arrested four persons in connection with the case.

Following a tip-off, police conducted simultaneous raids at Dahapada, Phuladi and other adjoining areas under Sahadevkhunta Police limits and seized the drugs.

Though there is no official confirmation on the exact amount of the seized contraband and its market value, sources claimed that cops have recovered around 1.6 kg of brown sugar which could be worth over Rs 1.5 crore. The team also seized two cars and a bullet from the possession of the accused, added sources.

Initially, police suspected involvement of some locals in the case as the latter protested seizure of the brown sugar. The investigation took another turn after the cops found out that one of the seized cars belonged to a local fish trader. A probe into the matter is currently underway.

Balasore Superintendent of Police revealed more details about the seizure of the contraband at a press meet later today. "Seized brown sugar weighs around 1 kg and is estimated to be worth over Rs 1 crore. The contraband item was being smuggled in a car which was intercepted by patrolling team near Phuladi. Four have been arrested and they will be brought on remand for interrogation," said Balasore SP.
