Bhubaneswar: Chandrasekharpur Police today arrested an Ola driver in connection with a hit and run case killing four puppies near Sailashree Vihar in Bhubaneswar.

The accused driver, Kanhu Charan Giri of Anandapur village under Sakhigopal police limits in Puri, has been arrested under sections 11 of prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 279/429 IPC and 184 MV Act.

As per reports, the incident took place in front of Highland Residence in Sailashree Vihar area on Sunday, when the Ola driver steering a Tata Bolt (bearing registration number OD02AP 7424) allegedly ran over four puppies killing them on the spot.

A security guard and one resident of the apartment who witnessed the accident tried stopping the vehicle but the driver sped past them and fled. The eye-witnesses however alerted animal right activists who rushed to the spot to take note of the incidence.

Demanding immediate arrest of the accused cab driver, animal welfare organisation ‘People For Animals’ lodged a complaint with Chandrasekharpur Police. “This killing of dogs is illegal under section 428 (mischief of killing and maiming animals) which is punishable both with imprisonment and fine. This is also violation of 279 of IPC and 184 of Motor Vehicle Act. It is also violation of section — 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The person responsible should be arrested as per the provision in the law,” mentioned PFA in its complaint.

Jeevan Ballabh Das, Secretary Member of State Animal Welfare Board, said, "The action against the accused will be a warning for others to drive carefully on the road so that no animal is harmed."

Based on this, police conducted inquiries before arresting Giri today under various sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
