Sambalpur: In view of the rising water level of Hirakud Dam following incessant rain in the upper basin of Mahanadi River, the dam authorities have decided to release the season’s first floodwater from the dam on August 14.

Chief Engineer of the dam Sunil Kumar Nayak informed that the sluice gates of the reservoir would be opened any time after 11 AM on Wednesday.

However, the decision regarding the number of gates to be opened and the quantity of water to be released from the reservoir will be decided after assessing several conditions including the amount of rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh, added Nayak.

Reports said, the water level of Hirakud Dam is on rise following substantial rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh since the last one week.

Meanwhile, the water level of the dam stood at 611.19 feet at 1 PM today against the water storage capacity of 630 feet. The inflow of water in Hirakud was 1,54,159 cusec while the outflow was 17,740 cusec, added reports.
