Bhubaneswar/Surat: A youth, who would fly to multiple destinations in Surat from his native Ganjam district in Odisha to commit thefts, has been arrested by the Surat City Crime Branch.

The accused has been identified as Dandapani Bisoi. However, he used to introduce himself as Lala alias Nelu alias Gurkha to conceal his original identity. Dandapani natively belongs to Ganjam district of Odisha while he used to live in a rented house at Keshav Nagar in Limbayat area of Surat.

The sleuths have recovered cash worth Rs 8.92 lakh in Indian currency and Rs 6.24 lakh in foreign denomination, clothes worth Rs 2.15 lakh and a motorcycle from his possession. The Crime Branch have also seized some equipment such as hammers, cutters, hand gloves, and masks which he used to break the locks and doors, said reports.

"During the interrogation, Dandapani confessed that he used to fly to Surat from Odisha to commit thefts and particularly targeted locked houses, offices and factories during the night time," informed ACP of Surat City Crime Branch, RR Suvera.

Dandapani was conducting the burglaries in the industrial areas of the diamond city since 2014 and has so far committed more than 30 thefts, said the Crime Branch.

The inter-state robber introduced himself as a manager in a multinational company to the neighbours and had told them that he natively belonged to West Bengal instead of Odisha, said sources.

The accused was also arrested in 2010 for stealing copper from a factory under Katargam police station in the city.
