Bhubaneswar: After a relaxation of three months, Odisha government will reintroduce stricter enforcement of traffic rules under the revised Motor Vehicles Act from December 1.
Odisha Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera on Friday informed that it is the responsibility of the State government to ensure safety of commuters as well as enforce traffic rules in the larger interests of the people.
“We are going to strictly enforce the MV Act from December 1, 2019,” said Behera.
Behera further stated that revised fines would be collected as per the provisions of the Act.
It is pertinent to mention here that the State government had to relax the enforcement of guidelines under the amended Motor Vehicles Act 2019 for three months following a fracas between public and police during an enforcement drive at Rajmahal square in Bhubaneswar in September.
The Transport Minister stated that the State government had relaxed collection of hefty fines as many people did not possess necessary documents including Driving License and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.
While replying to a question in the State Assembly on Thursday, Transport Minister had informed that a little over Rs 1 crore was been collected as fine from traffic rule violators after implementation of the new MV Act on September 1.
A highest penalty amount of Rs 46, 00,850 was collected from 5,317 persons for driving vehicles without valid driving licences.
As many as 2,111 people were penalised for driving vehicles without insurance and a fine of Rs 13, 79, 700 was collected from the violators during the period. As many as 1,177 persons were penalised for not having pollution certificates while a fine of Rs 38, 16,110 was collected from the violators. Besides, 490 persons were booked for drunken driving and Rs 7,38,100 was collected from them as penalty.
