Heavy Rainfall Alert For Odisha As Low Pressure Likely To Become Well-Marked

Bhubaneswar: The Low-pressure area over North coastal Odisha and adjoining Gangetic-West Bengal is likely to become well-marked and trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha in the next 24 hours. Several parts of Odisha have already received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours with Athagarh in Cuttack district recording highest 182 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, followed by Banki (165mm) and Dhenkanal (144mm).

HR Biswas, director of Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre informed that the south-west monsoon is active over Odisha and the State has received 643.4mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 14 against the normal precipitation of 736.48 mm.

“The Low-Pressure area over north coastal Odisha, adjoining West Bengal coast is likely to become well marked in the next 24 hours. Under its influence, several parts of Odisha will experience light to moderate and heavy rainfall in the next two days,” said Biswas.

According to Biswas, Orange warning has been issued for Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh as heavy rainfall will occur at these places in the next 24 hours. There is a possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and some damage to kutcha roads and houses in these districts, the met office warned.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Bolangir, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam, Malkangiri and Sundergarh.

On August 15 (Saturday), districts of Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharshuguda, Bolangir, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh, Nuapada and Sonepur will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for the districts of Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Dhenkanal.

Several places interior and a few places in coastal Odisha will also experience rainfall on August 16 with heavy rainfall expected in Sundergarh Jharsuguda, Boudh, Bolangir,Keonjhar, Bargarh Nuapada, Nabarangpur, the Met Department said.

“There will be a slight decrease in rainfall activity on August 17 and 18. We have also issued warning for fishermen as the low-pressure system is likely to become well marked. As per the warning, fishermen have been asked not to venture into deep sea till August 16 as sea conditions will remain rough,” said Biswas.
