Bhubaneswar: The officials of Air Intelligence and Customs seized 215 grams of gold estimated to be worth Rs 8.91 lakh from a passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA).

According to reports, the gold was recovered from an Indian origin passenger from Madurai who had arrived at BPIA in AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur on January 17.

The passenger had concealed the gold inside his luggage and hand bag. Around 48 pieces of gold of foreign origin were recovered from the passenger’s luggage.

It is pertinent to mention here that there has been a significant rise in the number of gold smuggling cases and Bhubaneswar seems to be the new route to smuggle the precious metal.

Earlier in November last year, over 1000 grams of gold worth over Rs 50 lakh was seized at BPIA from a woman passenger from Kerala.
