Bhubaneswar: The officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs on Sunday night seized gold worth more than Rs 5.5 lakh from a passenger at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar.

The accused identified as a resident of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu arrived at the Bhubaneswar airport from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flight AK-31, said a statement issued by the Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive), Bhubaneswar.

Acting on an intelligence input, the Customs sleuths intercepted the accused and conducted a search of his body and personal baggage. Later, they found one silver coated gold bangle and two semi cylindrical gold bars weighing around 170.750 grams hidden in his rectum.

Meanwhile, the officials are interrogating the accused to elicit further information from him. Sources said investigation into the case is on.

Earlier, on September 12, gold worth Rs 21.89 lakh was seized from a passenger at the city airport.
