Baripada: Following the shocking death of a class VIII student at a girls’ residential school in Mayurbhanj district yesterday, the family members and locals staged a protest in front of district Collector's office today. The protest was withdrawn after the Red Cross announced Rs 50,000 compensation for the family of the deceased, sources said.

Earlier today, there was a protest demanding arrest of the accused school authorities and compensation for the girl’s family.

According to sources, a class VIII student of the girls’ residential school at Manida in Rasgovindpur block of Mayurbhanj district fell sick on Monday. The girl was first admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to Baripada Medical College and Hospital, but she died while undergoing treatment, sources said.

Following the death of the student, the family members of the girl and guardians of other students created ruckus inside the school premises today. The family members held the school management responsible for the student’s death and filed a complaint against the school headmaster, Block Extension Officer and the District Welfare Officer at the local police station, sources added.
