Bhubaneswar: Hours after a girl student was injured in a firing incident on Monday, Commissionerate Police termed it to be a case of accidental firing. Moreover, the cops arrested victim’s male friend Ashish Nayak in connection with the incident.

Commissionerate Police informed that the accused Ashish Nayak has criminal antecedents and he was with the victim in her rented house in Bajrangbihar under Infocity when the incident took place. Nayak was earlier arrested in connection with Nayapalli bombing case.

“It was a case of accidental firing and further probe in connection with the incident is underway,” says Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahoo.

Earlier, tension gripped Infocity area after the girl, who is said to be a fashion designing student, was injured in the firing. Initially, it was alleged that two unidentified miscreants fired two rounds at the girl when she was reportedly talking with her male friend.

The girl, identified as Monali (name changed) hails from Balasore district.

Following the incident, Monali was rushed to Kalinga Hospital as she had reportedly sustained two bullet injuries on her thighs.

From where did Nayak, who was earlier arrested in a bombing case, procure the gun and whether he was planning for some crime or not? Similarly, whether the girl student was aware of Nayak’s criminal background or not, all such questions still remain unanswered.

Meanwhile, the girl’s brother maintained that they do not have any information regarding today’s incident.

“My sister was staying in Bhubaneswar for the last two years. We got to know about the incident from a cousin who is also staying in Bhubaneswar. First we came to know that the firing took place on road and from media we learnt that the incident occurred in her room,” said injured Monali’s brother adding that he was completely unaware of any relationship of his sister with Nayak.
