Bhubaneswar: Reports of criminals operating their crime syndicate from inside Odisha jails are raising serious concerns over security lapses in prisons. To corroborate this, a gangster, identified as Shakil lodged in Choudwar jail allegedly recorded and sent an extortion threat video to a Cuttack-based businessman.

After OTV telecast a report on such lapses, Special DGP, Manoj Kumar Chhabra (Prisons & Correctional Services) on Saturday informed that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.

“Choudwar jail is one of the largest and most important jails in Odisha and adequate steps are taken to strengthen security. As the issue is serious in nature, an inquiry will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken if any lapses are found,” said Chhabra.

According to Chhabra, focus is being laid on ensuring that narcotics and other items like mobile phones do not enter jail premises.

“Our constant effort is to improve security measures in jails and we will ensure that such criminals are shifted to isolated cells,” Chhabra added.
