Berhampur:  It is rightly said 'family is not defined by our genes, it is built and maintained through love'. The famous adage has been proved by a couple from Italy with adopting a baby girl from an orphanage here in Ganjam district on Saturday.

The foreign couple – Nicola Gambaro and Elisa Ubegio – adopted the child named Sneha from the Utkal Balashram in Berhampur.

The couple's application for adoption of an orphan child was uploaded on the website of Central Adoption Resources Authority (CARA) through a special adoption agency. They got the information regarding Sneha from the website and showed their keen interest to adopt her.

They had approached the district administration three years back. Finally, the district administration handed over the girl to the couple after completing necessary formalities in presence of Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange and other officials.

“The child was handed over to the couple after verification of all the necessary documents. It is a matter of pleasure that the child would get a good environment and parents to grow. We will monitor the condition of the child at regular intervals. We will also keep in touch with the couple,” the Collector said.

The couple expressed pleasure on receiving the child. "I am the mother of Sneha. I am very grateful to the Ganjam district administration for this special gift to me.  We are very happy and emotional today," said Elisa Ubejio.

The couple, who belongs to Genoa city of Italy, has assured to take utmost care of the child. They said that they will give special attention to her education, food and security.

Sneha was rescued from an abandoned place in 2017, and was being looked after by the Utkal Balashram since then.
