Bhubaneswar: Continuing its crackdown against extortionists, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police and Khandagiri Police, in a joint operation, arrested four persons for allegedly extorting money from long-route buses at Baramunda bus terminal in Bhubaneswar, on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as Dipak Behera, Soumya Ranjit Swain and Bharat Pradhan of Baramunda and Ashok Swain of Rayagada. They were forcibly collecting Rs 2000 each from drivers of long-route buses at the bus terminal.

The police seized over Rs 1 lakh cash, a SUV and five cellphones from their possession.

On Friday, the twin city police had announced the formation of anti-extortion task force under Additional Commissioner of Police Rekha Lohani to prevent incidents of extortion in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack during the festive season.

Earlier during the day, the anti-extortion wing of the Commissionerate Police arrested gangster Raja Acharya on charges of extortion. Raja was reportedly picked up by police and interrogated at the Capital Police Station this morning.

Following  Raja’s arrest, Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said, “Every month, he (Raja) was collecting Rs 20000 extortion money from a person for the construction of a house. No extortionist will be spared.”
