Phulbani: A former Lok Sabha member from Phulbani, Sugrib Singh died of Covid-19 infection, one of his relatives informed on Monday.

Singh was admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Saturday and succumbed to the virus this morning while undergoing treatment, said his brother-in-law Philiman Nayak.

“We are heartbroken by his sudden and untimely demise. He was elected from Phulbani parliamentary constituency in 2004 and worked for the betterment of the society,” Nayak added.

The former parliamentarian started his career as a journalist and then stepped into politics. He became the chairman of Phulbani NAC and then elected as Lok Sabha MP in 2004 on a BJD ticket.

Notably, Covid-19 situation in Odisha continues to remain grim with alarming rise in the new infections. The State reported 6,599 new infections and nine deaths in the last 24 hours.

Today’s surge pushed the State’s Coronavirus positive tally to 4,14,056 while the death toll surged to 1,997. The active cases in the State stood at 49,075 while 3,62,931 patients have recovered from the disease so far.
