Cuttack: Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested three persons including former corporator of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), Ranjita Biswal on the charges of demanding extortion.

As per reports, all the accused had demanded an extortion of Rs 1 lakh from a city-based businessman. The money was recovered from the house of gangster brothers- Sushil and Sushant Dhalasamant, police said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Commissionerate Police has intensified its crackdown on anti-socials who are harassing businessmen and others by demanding extortion. The drive is part of the ‘Say No To Extortion’ campaign which was recently launched by the Commissionerate Police.

Ranjita Biswal, the former BJD corporator of Cuttack Municipal Corporation’s Ward No-7 was arrested for the first time on March 7, 2018 for her alleged links with notorious gangster brothers- Sushil and Sushant Dhala Samant (D-brothers).

She was allegedly part of the conspiracy hatched by the D-brothers from jail to kill four persons, mostly contractors and others who were once part of their criminal gang.

On April 10, 2019 Ranjit was again arrested for illegal possession of firearms. One 9 mm pistol and a 7 mm pistol with magazines along with five rounds of live ammunition were recovered from Ranjita’s house during a raid by police.
