Cuttack: The police on Sunday seized huge quantity of firecrackers that were illegally stockpiled at several manufacturing units operating in Jagatpur, Padmapur and Bhairipur areas in the city.

Acting on a tip-off, Badambadi Police raided the area and seized the huge amount of firecrackers worth over lakhs of rupees.

Police also detained three persons involved in the illegal manufacturing and selling of the firecrackers.

“We have also seized huge quantity of raw materials from the illegal manufacturing units. A case has been filed in Jagatpur police station into the incident and further investigation is underway,” said Amarendra Panda, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Cuttack.

Earlier on Saturday, a joint team of Badambadi Police and Special Squad Raid had conducted a raid on a firecracker manufacturing unit operating in Khannagar area of Cuttack town and seized huge quantity of handmade firecrackers. One accused Yudhistir Nayak was booked under Section 9(b) I.E Act r/w and Section 5 of Odisha Fireworks and Loud Speaker (Regulation) Act and forwarded to a court in this connection.

Similarly, firecrackers worth around Rs 70 lakh were seized following a raid on an illegal manufacturing unit at Nalabanta village under Aska police limits in Ganjam district on the same day. Three persons involved in manufacture and sale of the firecrackers were also arrested.

It is worth mentioning that Odisha government has imposed a ban on sale and use of firecrackers till November 30 to combat air pollution and prevent worsening of the Covid-19 situation.
