Dhenkanal: A major fire broke out at the grid substation of Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (OPTCL) near Meramundali in the district on Sunday.

The incident took place during noon after a high voltage cable went off suddenly. There was no report of any casualty in the incident. The reason behind the burst of cable has not been established.

Fire tenders from nearby station reached the spot and doused the blaze.  Power supply was disrupted for quite some time following the incident. Electricity officials have been pressed into service to repair the damaged cable.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier, on February 21, a similar incident had taken place at the same grid substation when a 315-MVA transformer caught fire. At least 10 fire tenders were mobilised to extinguish the flames.

Notably, the grid substation supplies power to several parts of northern India apart from places in Odisha.
