Bhubaneswar: People across Odisha continue to remain deprived of basic facilities, revealed reports submitted by secretaries of different departments.

The reports underlined acute shortage of doctors in hospitals, lack of teachers in schools and deplorable condition of bus stand and roads among some of the major problems people are facing across the State.

The reports, prepared after the secretaries visited various districts, further stated various colleges in Gajapati district do not have principals while there is shortage of teachers in schools and many places lack banking facilities. Similarly, shifting of private bus stand was found to be a major problem in Bargarh. The situation is no different in Ganjam, Cuttack, Khurda and Koraput districts.

On the Bargarh bus stand shifting issue, a resident said, “The bus stand is lying non-operational after completion of the construction work. I have taken a shop on rent, but cannot do business and am suffering losses.”

Narrating the problems in healthcare system, a resident in Khurda said, “Due to shortage of staff, doctors are immediately referring patients to private hospitals in Bhubaneswar. So the poor are suffering. Despite repeated complaints, the government is not taking any action.”

Khurda chief district medical officer (CDMO) Biswaranjan Pati admitted that there is shortage of doctors in hospitals. “It is true that there is shortage of doctors and other staff in hospitals. However, we are managing,” he said.

According to sources, an all-secretary meeting was also convened at the State secretariat after the submission of the reports in which the secretaries of different departments made suggestions to address the issues.

Planning and Convergence minister Padmanabha Behera said the problems will be addressed on the basis of the reports. “The Planning and Convergence department will coordinate with concerned departments and inform them about measures that need to be taken in their respective departments,” Behera said.

“We will discuss and analyse various issues being reported from different districts and accordingly steps will be taken for the benefit of people. The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government is by the people and for their welfare,” said Water Resources minister Raghunandan Das.
