Berhampur: Locals in Berhampur on Wednesday opposed the felling of trees by the Works Department near Old Berhampur for expansion of road to connect Andhapasara and First Gate under Berhampur Municipal Corporation.

It is alleged that the concerned department was urged not to cut the tress, but the felling of trees continues unabated.

"Felling of trees is rampant for the expansion of road. Even though we had earlier written to the executive and superintendent engineer about it, no steps were taken in this regard. Finally, we have decided to move the National Green Tribunal (NGT)," said Arvind Desibehera, member of a regional development council.

"We had already informed the superintendent engineer about the felling of trees and requested for relocation and transplantation of the trees, but no one is listening to us. If tree felling continues, we will definitely move NGT and stop the work," said Dilip Kumar, secretary of a local environmental organisation, 'Sabuja Bahini'.

No comments could be obtained from the concerned officials of the administration.
