Bhubaneswar: Following the declaration of results of Class 9th of Government Upper Primary School at IRC Village in Nayapalli, a high drama was witnessed near the campus when some students and their parents staged a protest after they found that they have failed to clear the exams.

According to reports, some of the 'failed' students gathered outside the school and reportedly locked the main gate as part of their protest. Tension ran high after one of the agitating students was picked up by police.

The school authorities have intentionally failed us just because we are slum dwellers, alleged the students.

The mother of the student said, "I don't know what my son did during the protest. But he was beaten up by the public and later detained by the cops at the police station. Many students are sitting here for the last three days but their complaints remained unheard."

"We have been sitting outside the school for three days now. Sir came to us to ask why we are sitting. We requested him to give us pass marks. He said who will do colouring? Where is it written that students residing in slums will do colour work? Will the Headmistress ever ask her ward to do such works?" said a student.

School Principal Sunanda Mekap clarified that the students who were failed had secured very less marks. "However, based on the directive of Board of Secondary Education (BSE) mandating a minimum of 66 per cent attendance, we have allowed form fill-up of 43 students for matriculation exam. The demand to allow rest of the 121 students who have failed in the exams to fill-up forms is not justified," she said.
