Cuttack: Eyes from the dead body of a man were allegedly gouged out at a government hospital in Cuttack city without the knowledge of the family members. The incident reportedly happened at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on November 11 after one Nanda Gagrai, a resident of Bhadrak died while undergoing treatment. However, the family members were shocked to find the eyes from the dead body missing.

As per allegations, the hospital authorities handed over the body and some certificates after Nanda's death and while performing the last rites, the family members realised that the eyes were missing.

The family members then found a certificate mentioning that Nanda had donated his eyes to the eye bank of LV Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneswar. But they alleged that no consent was taken regarding such donation.

Aggrieved, the family members accused the hospital authorities of gouging out the eyes and handing them the certificate to take advantage of their ignorance about paperwork.

Seeking justice in connection with the matter, Nanda’s family members today met Bhadrak Sub Collector alleging that the hospital authorities had removed the eyes without consent.

On the other hand, the authorities of LV Prasad Eye Institute refuted the charges levelled by the family members of the deceased. The authorities of the eye institute said that necessary approvals like signatures of family members of Nanda were taken.

Later on Saturday, Bhadrak Town police registered a case against LV Prasad Eye Institute after IGP of Eastern Range directed the district police to probe the matter.
