Balasore: Former member of the Parliament from Balasore constituency, Kartikeswar Patra passed away last night. He was 81.

Reports said, Patra had contracted Covid-19 a few days ago and his health condition deteriorated last evening. He passed away while being shifted to hospital.

Patra had successfully contested the 1991 Lok Sabha polls from Balasore as a Congress candidate. He was also elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from Bhograi seat thrice - two times on Congress ticket 1974, 1980 and once from CPI (1971).

He defeated veteran freedom fighter Pyari Mohan Das to enter Odisha Assembly in 1971 aged just 30 years.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik and many others condoled the demise of the senior leader.

Apart from being a strong politician, Patra was also an acclaimed writer. He had composed more than 50 plays, collection of stories and research pieces during his lifetime.
