Bhubaneswar: Former Parliamentarian and noted tribal leader of Sundergarh, Maurice Kujur passed away today at the age of 84 at a private hospital here on Sunday.

Born on 2 November 1935 in Belmunda village under Kinjirikela police limits, Kujur was first elected to the Lower House of the Parliament in 1984 from Sundergarh Parliamentary Constituency Congress ticket. He was later nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1996.

An eminent tribal leader, his constant endeavour to work for the welfare of tribals earned him the post of Chairperson of National Commission of Scheduled Tribes from 2008 to 2011.

Personalities cutting across party lines condoled the demise of Kujur. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik expressed sympathy and tweeted, “Saddened to know about the death of Ex-MP Maurice Kujur. My heartfelt condolences for the grieving family”

“My deepest condolences on the demise of eminent Congress leader & former MP of Sundergarh, Shri Maurice Kujur. He will be remembered for the decades of public service he gave to India. May his soul rest in peace," OPCC Chief NiranjanPatnaik wrote in Twitter.
