Eviction Of Prawn Enclosures Opposed In Odisha

Puri: Protesting eviction of prawn enclosures, local residents in Chilika today staged a demonstration and gheraoed the Krushnaprasad Tehsil office. On November 24, the local authorities had launched an eviction drive to demolish the enclosures.

A day after the eviction drive, hundreds of residents had protested the move and launched an agitation in front of the Tehsil office demanding immediate withdrawal of decision to demolish the enclosures. Later, after getting assurance from the Tehsildar, the protestors had called off their agitation.

However, when the eviction drive resumed today, the local residents again launched protest and gheraoed the Tehsil office. The agitating residents said that till eviction is not stopped completely, they will continue their protest.

President of the non-fishermen association, Kelucharan Jena, said, "We will die but not allow the government to carry out the eviction drive."
