Dhenkanal: An elderly man was killed after he was attacked by an elephant at Palasahi under Mahabiroad range in Parajang area of the district this morning.

As per reports, the deceased, identified as Bauri Sahu had gone to his field to guard crops when he was attacked by the elephant. The jumbo reportedly lifted Sahu with its trunk and trampled him to death.

Although he was later rescued and rushed to the nearby hospital by villagers, doctors declared him brought dead.

Meanwhile, on receiving information forest officials reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident. They also launched an operation to drive away the pachyderm into the wild from human habitation.

Sources said since past one month a herd of more than 25 pachyderms have been wreaking havoc in the nearby areas by destroying hundreds of acres of agricultural fields and damaging vast stretch of standing crops during harvest season.
