Dhenkanal: An elephant calf believed to be one-and-half-month-old fell into an open drain in Gunudei village under Dhenkanal Sadar Range while crossing the road with its herd. It was finally rescued from the drain after a two-hour-long operation, thanks to the efforts of the local forest personnel.

As per reports, the incident occurred this morning when the calf and her mother along with their herd were crossing Gunudei village, on their way to the forest range. While all the mammals managed to take a leap over the nullah, the calf couldn't and subsequently slipped into it.

The calf remained trapped for hours as its mother failed to pull it out of the drain.

Informed, a few staff of the Gadasali forest section reached the spot and managed to pull it out with the help of sandbags. The mother stood silently and observed the rescue operation that lasted for more than two hours.

The health condition of the elephant calf is currently stable, sources said.
