Ganjam: Amid the grim Covid-19 situation gripping the State, the residents at Sishunda village in Ganjam district woke up to the shocking brutal murder of an elderly couple on Friday.

The bodies of the old couple- Bhim Pradhan and Sisula Pradhan- were found lying near a hut in a cashew orchard near the village which falls under the Jagannath Prasad police limits. It is suspected that the murder took place on Thursday night.

Some locals were passing by the area on Friday morning when they came across the bodies and intimated the police. Circumstantial evidence hints that the elderly couple was brutally hacked to death with hatchet.  The police recovered the bodies and sent them for post mortem. An investigation has been launched into the double murder case.

According to sources, the couple had been living in the cashew orchard for a long time and earned a living by collecting cashew nut. About 10 days back, the couple’s son and daughter-in-law had visited them.

While the police are yet to establish the motive behind the killing, it is suspected that some thieves might have entered the cashew orchard last night with an intention to loot and murdered the couple for resisting them.

However, the police are yet to identify the killer/s or the motive behind the brutal crime.
