Khordha: A man who lost around Rs 17 lakh to online fraud attempted self-immolation in front of Khordha Collectorate on Monday protesting alleged inaction of police.

The man, identified as Brajabandhu Sahu of Bakoi village under Bolagada block, tried to set himself ablaze by pouring kerosene. However, alert policemen who were present there caught hold of Sahu and prevented him from the self-immolation.

According to Sahu, he was defrauded of 16.95 lakh while purchasing timber wood online. Though he had lodged a complaint in the cyber crime police station in Cuttack, no action has been taken into the matter since last one and half year, he alleged.

Sahu said he was under tremendous mental pressure after failing to repay the loan he had availed from bank and forced to attempt self-immolation in front of the Collectorate for justice.

“I have a timber depot in Bolagada. I used to buy wood from outside the state and sell furniture. But I have been duped by an online fraud company of around 17 lakh. Though I have lodged complaints at Bolagada police station and the cyber crime police station in Cuttack, no step has been taken in this connection yet. I am unable to pay the bank loan and under tremendous pressure. I attempted self-immolation as I am completely helpless now,” said Sahu.
