Angul:  A doctor was allegedly thrashed by a group of traffic constables today at Thana chhak area of Angul town for not wearing a helmet.

As per reports, the doctor Kamalkant Jena, an ENT specialist at the district headquarters hospital was stopped by the constables during a helmet checking drive early this morning.

Jena in his police complaint said that despite agreeing to pay the fine for not wearing a helmet, he was attacked by the constables.

"The constables verbally abused me and when I raised objection and agreed to pay the fine, they slapped and hit me with sticks they were carrying," the doctor broke down while narrating the incident.

Jena who sustained injuries in the incident was later admitted to the district headquarters hospital.

"Around 11 am today I saw police constables attacking Dr Jena. After my intervention they stopped and later we brought him to the hospital. This is blatant misuse of power," Dilip Deo, an eyewitness said.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA) President has lodged a complaint at the Angul police station in connection with the incident. The Association has warned that healthcare service will be discontinued if no action is taken against the constables within 24 hours.

On the other hand, SDPO Harihar Pani has assured action against the erring constables. "After a proper investigation, necessary action will be taken against the accused," Pani said.
