Rayagada: Despite numerous appeals by the government, the stigma associated with COVID-19 looks far from being completely eradicated. This was again evident after an ailing minor boy was denied entry into a village in Rayagada district due to fear of coronavirus infection.

As a result, the minor boy has reportedly taken shelter at the passenger rest shed of the bus stand at Nuagaon village of Bisamkatak.

According to sources, the villagers did not allow the minor boy to enter the village as he had returned from COVID-19 hotspot areas like Berhampur and Cuttack.

Having developed a wound on one of his hands, the minor boy had reportedly gone for a check-up and subsequent treatment to Koraput, Berhampur and Cuttack along with a person.

However, the boy returned to Nuagaon yesterday after allegedly not getting the required treatment in Cuttack. Situation became even worse for him when he was not allowed inside his own village. Being an orphan, he had nowhere to go but to the rest shed at the bus stand where he took refuge.

The local Sarpanch could not be contacted over the incident. Thankfully, ADM Sarat Chandra Panda informed that steps will be taken to shift the minor boy to the dedicated COVID Care Home at the gram panchayat.

“After the matter was brought to my notice, I immediately asked the BDO to initiate steps to shift the boy to the COVID Care Home,” said Panda.

In another similar incident reported two months back, a youth made his car home after he was denied entry into the village in Ganjam district.

The youth, Madhav Patra of Basudevpur area under Sanakhemundi block, was allegedly restricted by Anganwadi workers and villagers from entering the village over the fear of Covid-19 spread.
