Bolangir: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Kamemunda under Turekela block in Bolangir district on Monday.

As per reports, the deceased farmer Sarat Majhi had taken loan from private money lenders to cultivate his 1 acre of land. However, he suffered crop loss and was in immense mental agony since then.

Family members of Majhi said that unable to bear the trauma, he allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Though Majhi was rushed to Kantabanji hospital, he was declared brought dead by doctors, sources said.

“He took loans from various cooperative societies, microfinance companies for cultivation. But he suffered huge crop loss forcing him to take the extreme step,” said a local adding that they will together apprise the district administration about the matter and demand government aid for the family.

Earlier on August 5, a farmer from Madiguda village in Kalahandi district allegedly committed suicide due to crop failure.
